In north Georgia communities that are located near the A.T., we are partnering with county school systems by organizing hikes for both middle school and high school students and their teachers. Students have also participated as citizen scientists in
World Water Monitoring Day by testing water quality in streams or springs near the A.T. Students are often amazed to learn that they could begin hiking on a trail in their community and walk more than 2,000 miles to Maine. They also learn about public land stewardship,
Leave No Trace ethics, and trail maintenance. The view from a mountain ridge down to the valley where they reside is a veritable “eye-opener”.
