GATC Outreach

Inner City Youth

In metro Atlanta we are partnering with the Phoenix Boys Association to develop a hiking program that introduces urban youth to outdoor experiences and helps to develop their leadership skills and self-sufficiency. After an initial trip to the Len Foote Hike Inn where they can hike with a daypack and spend the night under a roof, these boys graduate to a series of increasingly difficult backpacking trips. On those trips, they learn to carry their own tents and sleeping bags and fix their own food. Completion of the entire Pine Mountain Trail at FDR State Park entitles them to a patch and certificate of achievement and an opportunity to backpack on the more difficult A.T. Leave No Trace ethics are an important component of their learning experience.
