Thanks to a generous grant from REI (
Recreational Equipment Incorporated), six groups of young people visited the
Len Foote Hike Inn this spring. GATC volunteers led two groups of urban youth (sponsored by the
Phoenix Boys Association), and two groups each from Towns County and White County school systems in north Georgia. The Hike Inn’s environmental education specialist accompanied the groups on the five mile walk to the Inn, then showed them the various sustainable and energy efficient features of the
LEED Certified structure after their arrival at the Inn. Good food, some free time to explore, evening programs, and the five mile return hike rounded out the experience for these young people and their mentors. For many, this was the longest walk they’d ever completed—and their first experience with spending a night in a forest setting where the sky is really dark.
