Presidential Ponderings
As I started thinking about writing this column for March, I continued to be amazed at all the projects GATC is in the midst of. This month we host two crews of trail volunteers participating in their college alternative spring break programs.

2011 Appalachian Trail Celebration & Backpacking Clinic - March 4-6
Check out the full three days of activities hosted by the Friends of Amicalola Falls State Park. Participate in an overnight wilderness camping kick-off. Learn how the A.T. got started. Attend the many programs at the Amicalola Lodge and conference rooms. All programs are free but a $5 parking fee applies. See flyer.

Laurel Ridge Trail Dayhike on March 12, 2011
Co-leaders Tom and Nancy Lovingood led an afternoon hike along the Laurel Ridge Trail with nine participants. After one postponement due to the weather and several rainy weekends, the day for this hike was perfect for an outdoor event.

Appalachian Trail Museum Plans for Second Season
A section of the Appalachian Trail is being relocated from its current location near the Appalachian Trail Museum in Pine Grove Furnace State Park so it passes by the museum's front door. This is just one of many exciting changes that we are working on before we open the museum for its second season on Saturday, April 2.

Welcome to Georgia’s Ridgerunner & Springer Caretaker
This year GATC welcomes returning Ridgerunner Rhea Patrick and Springer Mountain Caretaker John Lemberg. After a week of refresher training (LNT, Wilderness First Aid, etc) in the Smokies with all of the southern Ridgerunners, Rhea and John were on the Trail in Georgia starting the first weekend of March.

It’s official! Blairsville is now an Appalachian Trail Community
Blairsville has received the designation of Appalachian Trail Community by the Appalachian Trail Conservancy. Public celebrations and media events are in the planning stages and will include an exciting day of fun at Walasi-Yi in Union County (tentatively scheduled for March 22, 2011.)

Two North GA Communities Receive ATC Trail Community Designation

In March, two north Georgia communities received the ATC Trail Community designation.

Dahlonega’s designation ceremony was held on March 18 and was followed by a weekend festival to celebrate the event.

Blairsville/Union County’s designation ceremony took place at Neel Gap on March 22. Click on photo at right to see Photo Gallery.

Hike Inn Offers GATC Discounted Rate of $25 on March 23
Appalachian Education and Recreation Services (AERS), has set aside Wednesday, March 23, as the first not-for-profit appreciation night at the Len Foote Hike Inn to honor the Georgia Appalachian Trail Club. On that date, GATC may stay at the Hike Inn for the discounted rate of $25.

GATC Shares in DNR Adopt-A-Stream Honor
The Georgia Appalachian Trail Club and Benton MacKaye Trail Association joint water quality monitoring venture, The Three Forks Alliance, was presented with the Georgia Adopt A Stream 2010 Outstanding Partnership and Outreach Award on March 26.
