The Journey Continues...Hike 2

David BarkThe journey continues on my quest to hike the Georgia section of the Appalachian Trail with the GATC AT series Springer Gap to Hightower Gap.

Another beautiful morning for a hike on the AT, the weather was sunny & warmed up to the 60's!

We had around 28 people for this hike, so with the excellent planning of Don Hicks, we were able to spilt up into 3 groups.

I was in the third group, lead by Don himself. This hike has lots of great wilderness to view. We crossed several streams, some by foot and other by small foot bridges.

The best stop along this hike is Long Creek Falls. We stopped there for lunch and take in the amazing falls. The drop is 50 feet from the top, and you can get to within 15 yards of the falls!

Long Creek FallsAfter lunch, we started the final ascent up Hawk Mountain towards Hightower Gap. It is all up hill from here, maybe gaining 1000 feet in elevation over the 2.5 miles to the top.

We took a quick break at the Hawk Mountain shelter before our final push to Hightower Gap.

Overall the hike went well, and we all had a great time! We met several through hikers on their way to Maine. Next is Hightower to Wood Gap on April 2nd, so I will sign off until then.
