NATIONAL TRAILS DAY

Unicoi State Park

Activities will begin at the Intern Camp in the “Bottoms” Area, near
Lower Smith Creek unless otherwise noted.  Parking available at the
Delayed Harvest or Mountain Bike Trail Parking Lot.

This event is sponsored by the Georgia Appalachian Trail Club, the American
Hiking Society  and the “Friends of Unicoi State Park” Volunteer Organization.

Exhibitors include:  Trout Unlimited, Mountain Crossings, DNR Search & Rescue Team, etc…

8:30 a.m. Volunteer Registration

9:00 a.m. Welcome & Overview of National Trails Day

9:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. Trail Maintenance: Join volunteers as they perform trail work projects along the Bottoms Loop Trail. 

9:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Craft Station:  Join Unicoi staff & volunteers making fun crafts such as Bull Roarers, Stick Boats and Leaf Prints.

10:00 a.m. Trout Fishing Demonstration:  Learn about the equipment and techniques used to catch trout in North Georgia streams.

10:00 a.m.  “Hiking In Helen” Special Event:  Join this fun guided hike that travels three miles from the park's Lodge to Helen. Participants can hike back three miles or return by shuttle. Bring lunch. Register in advance.  Meet on 3rd Floor Elevator Lobby – Unicoi Lodge.

10:30 a.m. Wilderness First Aid:  Learn helpful basics of first aid in a wilderness setting.

11:00 a.m. Children’s Program:  Mountain Crossings volunteers will offer a discussion of the Chattahoochee National Forest, the Appalachian Trail, thru-hiking and staying safe in the woods

12:00-1:00 p.m.  Door Prizes:  Lunch is free for all volunteers!

1:30 p.m. Interpretive Hike:  Wear sturdy shoes for a 1-mile trek through the mountain forest of Unicoi.

1:30 p.m. Fire & Shelter Building: Learn how to build a fire using different fire starting techniques.  Also learn to make your own shelter if you happen to be lost in the woods. 2:30 p.m. Wilderness Survival Tips & Lost Prevention: Our staff will be available to discuss the basics of surviving in the woods.

5:30 p.m. Snakes:  Learn about these cold blooded creatures.  You can meet Jake the Snake or King Tomo.   Back Room Trading Post – Campground.

8:00 p.m. Music Concert with “Reconciled”: Lisa Beck, Al Bradberry, Ron Bailey, and Stan Wilson make up this southern gospel group from Gwinnett County.  The group has been playing music together for approximately twelve years throughout the southeast.  This program will be a “pass-the-hat” donation for the entertainers, as they have volunteered their time to visit Unicoi.  Unicoi Lodge.
